Getting to The Greenhoose

Situated approximately 800kms north of Cairns, Lockhart River and Portland Roads are off the Peninsula Development Road (PDR).

It is a very isolated area which can only be reached in the wet season by plane or boat. During the dry season it is advisable to use a well equipped 4WD vehicle, and be aware that there are creek crossings and dirt roads. Please look at the Bureau of Meteorology website for river depths and the Queensland Government's traffic and travel information website for road conditions before you travel in the wet season (December to April).

The dirt road starts at Laura, and these are red earth or sand roads. There are some sealed roads, but the majority of roads are dirt, which can be difficult to drive on if you are not experienced with these kinds of roads. It is advisable that your vehicle is well maintained, and that you can change your tyres.
